Method of making sintered ceramic nuclear fuels
Description
Purpose: To attain energy saving, reduction of the production cost, simplification for the production steps and improvement in the quality. Method: A mixture comprising uranium dioxide or other uranium oxide, plutonium oxide, thorium oxide, etc. and further incorporated with gadolinium oxide as neutron absorbers is used for the starting powder of nuclear fuels for use in the present invention. After molding the starting powder, the molding product is sintered in a gaseous carbon dioxide atmosphere, then ground as required and then reduced by heating in a hydrogen gas atmosphere. This can simplify the manufacturing steps and improve the quality. (Takahashi, M.)
