Use of gamma radiation in the sugar mills crystallization process control

  • 1. Pernambuco Univ., Recife, PE (Brazil). Dept. de Energia Nuclear

Description

The technical feasibility of applying the gamma-ray transmission method to the control of the saccharose crystallization process at sugar mills was investigated. Attenuation measurements using a Cs-137 gamma beam showed that the transmission factor depends on the solid phase concentration of saccharose solutions in a very definite manner. Furthermore, temperature and purity of the solutions showed no significant influence on this attenuation behaviour. Therefore, measurements of the transmission factor can be used to implement a continuous control of the saccharose crystallization process on a industrial scale in sugar mills.
