Description

This presentation will provide an overview of crystal growth of scintillation materials. After providing a brief summary of established scintillation materials (e.g. NaI:Tl, CsI:Tl etc.), newer materials will be covered. This will include high energy resolution materials such as LaBr3:Ce, CeBr3 and SrI2:Eu. New materials that provide simultaneous detection of gamma-rays and neutrons with good gamma-neutron discrimination will also be briefly discussed. Challenges in crystal growth, particularly in scaling up to large enough sizes for commercial use will be covered. Applications of scintillators such as nuclear medical imaging, nuclear monitoring, well-logging and physics research will be discussed and emerging candidates will be highlighted. Finally, ceramic scintillators will also be covered. (author)
