Evaluation of treatment outcomes of malignant liver tumors by radioembolization with Y-90 microsphere at Bach Mai Hospital

Description

Aims: To evaluate the primary treatment outcomes of malignant liver tumors by radioembolization with Y-90 microsphere at Bach Mai Hospital. Patients: 60 patients with primary or secondary liver cancer, who had been treated by radioembolization with Y-90 microsphere and followed up 6 months post-treatment. Method: descriptive, prospective. Results: 60 primary liver cancer had been treated by radioembolization with Y-90 microsphere. Among these, 31 patients were staged as BCLC B and 26 were BCLC C. Mean dose of Y-90 was 1.25±0.38 GBq, mean radiation dose to tumor was 264.4 Gy, to normal liver tissue: 25.4 Gy, to lung tissue: 2.4 Gy. After 6 months: mean AFP reduced from 12090.3 ng/ml to 1081.0 ng/ml; the size of liver tumors was reduced from 6.9 cm to 4.1 cm; 31.5% of tumors were eliminated. Conclusions: Radioembolization with Y-90 microsphere (or Selective Internal Radiotherapy - SIRT), in the treatment of liver cancer and liver metastases is a novel technique with good outcomes and less side effects. This new technique brings the hope for the advanced liver cancer patients. (author)
