Sensitivity of elastic and total cross sections to the nuclear surface

  • 1. Tokyo Univ. of Education (Japan). Dept. of Physics

Description

We propose a new parametrization for the nuclear density distribution, for which we can calculate the nuclear scattering amplitude in the Glauber approach analytically. Our formulation expresses the nuclear density distribution with two parameters, i.e., the nuclear radius and the diffuseness parameter. By using this formulation, we show that nuclear scattering at high energies is insensitive to the nuclear diffuseness, especially for scattering at small angles. To obtain information on the nuclear diffuseness from nuclear scattering at small angles, it is required to measure the cross sections with an accuracy of -0.1%.
