Description

The high biological activity of selenium, the effectivity of SH-groups in radiation protection and consequently the importance of determining their radiosensibility and of obtaining data on acceptor properties of selenium gave reason for a series of investigations, in which - both under normal and under pathological (radiation load) conditions - the metabolism of selenium-methionine in living organisms and its role in the protective reactions of the organism against ionizing radiations were studied. An investigation was performed with a radiochromatographic method of the building of Se75-radioactive amino acids into proteins and on studies of the metabolism products of Se75-selenomethionine detected in the urine of healthy and of irradiated animals 24 hours after the administration of the labelled compound and subsequent irradiation. It was shown that the metabolism of Se75-seleniummethionine is different from the metabolism of its natural analogue (S-methionine). (author)
