Plutonium rock-like fuel LWR nuclear characteristics and transient behavior in accidents

  • 1. Japan Atomic Energy Research Inst., Tokai, Ibaraki (Japan). Tokai Research Establishment

Description

For the disposition of excess plutonium, rock-like oxide (ROX) fuel systems based on zirconia (ZrO2) or thoria (ThO2) have been studied. Safety analysis of ROX fueled PWR showed it is necessary to increase Doppler reactivity coefficient and to reduce power peaking factor of zirconia type ROX (Zr-ROX) fueled core. For these improvements, Zr-ROX fuel composition was modified by considering additives of ThO2, UO2 or Er2O3, and reducing Gd2O3 content. As a result of the modification, comparable, transient behavior to UO2 fuel PWR was obtained with UO2-Er2O3 added Zr-ROX fuel, while the plutonium transmutation capability is slightly reduced.
