Dissolution of hematite in citric acid-EDTA mixtures containing different reducing agents

Description

The present study is directed towards assessing different reducing agents in citric acid EDTA mixtures for dissolving the hematite deposits from the structural surfaces of cooling water circuits of BWRs. The reducing agents employed are ascorbic acid, thioglycolic acid, hydrazine, sodium dithionite and oxalic acid. The dissolution experiments were performed using synthetically prepared hematite. The best dissolution was observed when ascorbic acid was used as the reductant, next best was thioglycolic acid. There was practically no dissolution in the case of the other reducing agents.
