Description
Studies on the radioecology of 137Cs and 134Cs have been conducted at a west Cumbrian hill farm which received up to 20 kBq/m2 of radiocaesium in Chernobyl fallout. Changes in the radiocaesium content of various components of the ecosystems with time have been shown to depend on the interactions of a large number of different factors. These include the behaviour of radiocaesium in the different soil types, variation in herbage intake by sheep and the availability of radiocaesium for absorption in the gut. Some potential countermeasures which might be used with free ranging animals are also discussed. (author)
