The heterotic string and a fermionic construction of the E8 Kac-Moody algebra

Description
The basic representation of the E8 Kac-Moody algebra is constructed in a transcendental way out of 16 real Fermi fields themselves constructed out of 8 real Bose fields. This result provides a fermionic construction of the E8 + E8 symmetry of the heterotic superstring theory and facilitates the calculation of the spectrum. The triality properties of SO(8) subgroups are used in a crucial way. (orig.)
