New aspects of the magnetic monopole problem
Description
The state of the problem of the Dirac magnetic monopole has been reviewed. Four trends in its development are analyzed: 1) classical and quantum theory of the Dirac monopole; 2) magnetic charge and composite hadron models; 3) the magnetic monopole in the nonabelian theory with spontaneous broken symmetry; 4) the Young-Mills field theory in the presence of magnetic sources. A thorough connection of the magnetic charge model and the general topological properties of gauge fields has been observed
