Cooling water of pH=9.0-9.6 in Heller system with aluminium heat exchangers

  • 1. EGI, Budapest (Hungary)

Description

In the boilers of the power plants alkaline water is often applied to prevent corrosion of the steel tubes. As in the Heller-type cooling system direct-contact condenser is used in which the cooling water mixes with the steam condensate, the quality of the cooling water equals that of the condensate. Boiler's feedwater of suitable alkalinity and neutral or slightly alkaline cooling water pH≤8.5, favorable for the aluminium tubes of the heat exchangers, can be simultaneously ensured by a combination of volatile and nonvolatile alkalizers. In certain cases it can be advantageous if pH=9.0-9.6 is allowed in cooling water circuit. For this reason the authors have made several parallel experiments to discover the corrosion of aluminium in water of pH=8.7-9.6. According to the results - summarized in this report - the pH value of the cooling water up to 9.6 does not result in the corrosion of aluminium tubes used in the heat exchangers of the cooling system of the power plant
