Description

This paper provides an evaluation of iodine capture media that could be employed for iodine removal from liquid waste streams directed to the Hanford Liquid Effluent Retention Facility (LERF) and Effluent Treatment Facility (ETF). The evaluation was performed using batch tests of iodide and iodate removal from a LERF/ETF simulant using a series of iodine removal media that can sequester iodine through various mechanisms, including sorption and precipitation (e.g., Ag, Ce). The final decision on the design of the presumed added process or a unit operation has not been investigated. The activity in this presentation is an initial technology development activity that will provide data on I-129 removal and management that can support a process/unit operation design. (authors)
