Description

In this paper the theory of the ortho hydrogen to para hydrogen transition by radiation and other effects is presented. This molecular transition is of importance for its potential application to the development of devices such as a high power (1,000 Joules/mole) Super Radiance source, and IR Laser, an energy storage or space power source, and the study of interstellar hydrogen clouds. If the transition lifetime is of reasonable length this would indicate yet another mode of radiative energy transfer in interstellar space and another tool for the study of the distribution of matter in space. The existing theory which is rather limited in scope, deals primarily with the calculation of the lifetime of an isolated ortho hydrogen molecule, and the heterogeneous conversion of ortho hydrogen by paramagnetic gases and catalysts. A theoretical and experimental approach is presented which could be the precursors of useful devices
