Nuclear Analytical Techniques With A Cyclotron

Description
It is demonstrated that a 30 MeV AVF cyclotron with electrostatic extractor, combined with a dispersive magnetic system, is well suited to perform elemental analyses on various materials. The improvement of the energy resolution is about a factor of three, yielding a resolution of 10 -3. The relatively high beam energy is exploited in Rutherford and nuclear scattering combined with recoil techniques (ERD) and in high-energy light-ion channeling. A micro beam is exploited with lateral resolutions of 3 mu m for PIXE analyses and down to 0.7 mu m for STIM. This facility is particularly useful for the determination of intra-cellular elemental concentrations in bio-medical tissues
