Concentration-dependent quantum efficiency and relaxation in Nd-doped laser glasses

Description
The stimulated emission cross section and the spontaneous emission and nonradiative relaxation rates of the Nd3+ upper laser level are required in models that predict the energy-storage efficiency and gain coefficients of high-power fusion lasers. On a series of candidate glasses at several Nd concentration, independent measurements are reported of the broad-band excitation fluorescence quantum efficiency and lifetime. The spontaneous emission rate and cross section are then compared with Judd-Ofelt predictions and previous laser excitation results. The excited state relaxation dynamics and the effect of concentration quenching on the Nd luminescence efficiency were studied for phosphate, aluminophosphate, and silicate glasses
