Polarization bremsstrahlung of charged particles in presence of the Vavilov-Cherenkov effect

  • 1. Leningradskij Politekhnicheskij Inst., Leningrad (USSR)

Description

The radiation emitted by electrons of a medium excited by fast charged particles is considered. It is shown that for frequencies such that c/v0(ε(ω))1/2<1 and for which the Vavilov-Cherenkov effect occurs, the radiation intensity is by 1 or 2 orders of magnitude greater than that for frequencies in the c/v0(ε(ω))1/2>1 range. The radiation is weakly anisotropic and mostly propagates outside the Cherenkov cone. It is polarization bremsstrahlung and may be interpreted as being the result of scattering of Cherenkov quanta by electrons of the atomic shells. The radiation can be separated experimentally from other types of radiation
