Electro oxidation and extraction of Ce(IV) using tributyl phosphate and 2-ethyl hexyl hydrogen 2-ethylhexyl phosphonate from nitric acid medium

  • 1. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (India). Fuel Reprocessing Div.

Description

Solvent extraction of cerium from nitric acid medium after its electro oxidation to fourth valency state was carried out using tributyl phosphate (TBP) and 2-ethyl hexyl hydrogen 2-ethylhexyl phosphonate (KSM-17) as extractants. The efficiency of the extractants at different aqueous phase nitric acid concentrations and at different electrode potentials were determined. The method so developed for extraction of Ce was further extended to the partitioning of Ce from Ce-Am mixture derived from the extraction chromatographic elemental fractionation of Purex High Active Waste (HAW) solutions.
