Optimization of scattering samples in neutron time-of-flight experiments
Description
The finite geometry of neutron source (gas-target), scattering sample and detector as well as the finite resolution of the extraxted cyclotron beam in energy and time disturb the time-of-flight spectra in neutron scattering experiments. The analysis of the experimental results has to correct for these disturbances. These disturbing effects habe been studied by means of a Monte Carlo program. The shape, size and set up of the scattering sample have decisive influence upon these disturbances. In carefully chosen problems guidelines are worked out for optimizing the scattering sample. A series of experiments is suggested which could test our computer code. (orig.)

Die endliche Geometrie von Neutronenquelle (Gastarget), Streuprobe und Detektor und die energetische sowie zeitliche Breite des extrahierten Zyklotronstrahls fuehren im Flugzeitspektrum der gestreuten Neutronen zu Stoereffekten, die in der Auswertung korrigiert werden muessen. Diese Effekte wurden mit Hilfe eines Monte-Carlo-Programms untersucht. Insbesondere Form, Groesse und Anordnung der Streuprobe beeinflussen diese Stoereffekte. An Hand von Rechenbeispielen werden die Gesichtspunkte herausgearbeitet, die fuer eine optimale Wahl der Streuprobe zu beachten sind. Eine Messreihe zum Testen des verwendeten Rechenprogramms wird vorgeschlagen. (orig.)
