The main objectives of radioactive waste disposal are given in the paper. The basic principles are discussed according to the recommendations of the IAEA. The correlation between the radioactive waste category and disposal option is given. Different types of radioactive waste disposal facilities are described and their applicability for our specific conditions is discussed. The status of the problem in different countries is analysed
