Can Centauro events be due to hard collisions between hadronic constituents

  • 1. CERN, Geneva (Switzerland)

Description

Centauro events are examined assuming a production mechanism in nucleon-nucleon collisions. Since their rest mass is large (>=200 GeV), production must be related to interactions between constituents (quarks or gluons). The rate for such energetic encounters in cosmic rays appears to be much too small to account for the observed flux of events, thus reinforcing the speculation that they are due to an as yet unknown cosmic-ray phenomenon
