Description

The management of mixed waste has been a significant concern to nuclear utilities due the lack of available treatment and disposal capacity and the dual regulation of mixed waste by the EPA and NRC. This results in the utilities being placed in a position of storing small volumes of mixed waste on-site under an EPA hazardous waste permit. Permitted storage may subject the mixed waste generator to addition costs and liabilities associated with corrective action and improper management of wastes. In an effort to support the utilities in developing or assessing mixed waste programs, EPRI has initiated an ongoing integrated mixed waste program. As part of this initiative EPRI published a series of reports/guidelines to assist utility management and plant personnel. These include the following: Mixed Waste Management Guidelines; Mixed Waste Characterization Guidelines; Nuclear Utility Mixed Waste Stream Characterization Study; Mixed Waste Storage and Treatment Regulatory/Compliance Manual; Mixed Waste Treatment Study. Each of these documents should be used as key references when developing, implementing, and/or assessing a comprehensive mixed waste management program. In addition, EPRI has commissioned and will publish in 1997, the Mixed Waste Minimization Study
