Description
A 20 MeV microtron is an electron accelerator used as an injector for booster synchrotron which boosts the energy to 450 MeV/550 MeV. The beam at 450 MeV/550 MeV is injected to the storage rings Indus-1 and Indus-2 ring respectively. The injector microtron is housed in a shielded enclosure and is in operation since 1993 to provide electrons for booster synchrotron. Recently, a new, improved version of microtron is installed in place of the existing one inside shielded enclosure. Improvements in the new design were done based on operational experiences and engineering studies. The new microtron is capable of delivering high electron beam power compared with the previous one. The adequacy of existing shielded enclosure is evaluated for the operating parameters and recommendations are made to reduce dose levels to acceptable levels in accessible areas. Details of the calculation and measurements are presented in this paper
