Description
A first articles gives an overview of the debate in France about nuclear energy between, on the one hand, those who want to phase out nuclear or at least wait for the end of the Flamanville EPR to take further decisions, and, on the other hand, those who already want to plan new reactors. One of the issue in this debate is to conciliate economy (hundreds of thousands of jobs are at stake) and ecology. Next articles address the nuclear waste issue: the ongoing debate about the Cigeo project and a new public debate about the national plan of management or radioactive materials and wastes which will therefore concern other territories and sites that the Cigeo's one. One of the question will be the choice between storage and recycling. This also means that a debate about nuclear installation dismantling is necessary as outlines the chairwoman of the National Commission for a Public Debate (CNDP). The case of the controversial Cigeo project is then commented with indications about its history, and also about choices made by other countries regarding the type of soil in which wastes are to be stored. As spent fuels are not considered as wastes but as materials, their warehousing mode is the matter of debate: dry warehousing or in pools? As the Cigeo storage centres will not be large enough to receive all the nuclear wastes generated by nuclear plant decommissioning and dismantling, issues and questions emerge regarding the radioactivity level classification of these wastes. Some experts state that between ten and fifteen years are left before the design and development of a solution
