Description
Electric Corp., East Pittsburgh, Pa. 15112 - This paper describes the manufacturing effort and recent accomplishments on the coil being built by Westinghouse for the Large Coil Program. This coil utilizes a Nb3Sn forced flow cooled superconductor which is wound into grooves, machined into aluminum structural plates. This paper reviews coil winding in four areas. (1) ''Facility Planning and Equipment Design'', discusses how the winding facility was designed, and what winding equipment is used for coil winding. (2) ''Winding tool development and design'', describes how the winding tools were designed and how they have evolved during this project. (3) ''Winding processes and technique'', discusses how the coil is wound and what has been learned so far. (4) ''The behavior of Westinghouse Nb3Sn force flow conductor during winding'', describes how the conductor reacts to straightening, and winding and insulating. A general evaluation of winding experience and the lessons learned will also be included
