Development of natural gas in the French-speaking part of Switzerland

Description

Natural gas has known a rapid development in the French-speaking part of Switzerland and this trend is still continuing. Natural gas represents 13% of the overall energy consumption, which lies significantly above the Swiss average and, in the year 2000, it should reach about 20%. In order to meet the expected growth of consumption, Gaznat has already contracted, under long term agreements, large quantities of natural gas from diversified sources. Underground storage capacities in nearby France have been considerably increased and new gas-pipelines are being built. These pipelines will enable to double the supply capacity of the French-speaking part of Switzerland within the next three years. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Das Erdgas erlebte in der Westschweiz eine sehr schnelle Entwicklung, die auch heute noch anhaelt. Der Anteil des Erdgases am Gesamtenergieverbrauch betraegt heute 13%, was merklich ueber dem schweizerischen Durchschnitt liegt, und im Jahre 2000 rechnet man mit ungefaehr 20%. Um den voraussichtlichen Anstieg des Bedarfs decken zu koennen, hat sich Gaznat durch langfristige Beschaffungsabkommen betraechtliche Mengen Erdgas verschiedener Herkunft gesichert. Die unterirdische Lagerkapazitaet im benachbarten Frankreich wurde erheblich erhoeht. Ausserdem befinden sich neue Gas-Pipelines im Bau. Sie werden es ermoeglichen, in den drei kommenden Jahren die Kapazitaet des Westschweizer Verteilernetzes zu verdoppeln. (orig.)
