The IRSN experimental platform at Tournemire - An underground research laboratory aiming at strengthening IRSN expertise on HLRW geological disposal

Description

The Tournemire site is an ancient railway tunnel excavated in argillite in the south-eastern part of France and used by IRSN (French Institute for Radiation protection and Nuclear Safety) as an underground research laboratory to develop expertise on geological disposal of radioactive waste. The Tournemire site has been used to test geophysical methods like 3-dimensional seismic reflection to study geological layers, to investigate the excavation damaged zone, to test methods for fracture and pore water sampling acquisition, and to investigate the argillite-concrete interactions
