Experimental determination of the terminal velocity of narrow fraction particles

Description
The terminal velocity of particles is an important starting parameter in designing hydraulic or pneumatic transport systems. The literature that deals with terminal velocity includes a large number of equations obtained by testing of single spherical particles, whereas the deviations from the spherical shape of particles, the limited space and the presence of other particles have been accounted for by correction coefficients. This paper presents a defined experimental method for determination of the terminal velocity of particles that belong to the narrow fraction type. The experiments were carried out with quartz sand, where the particles density was ρp = 2660 kg/m3, and the obtained results were compared with the published equations and with values of the terminal velocity used by other authors.
