Neutron diffraction study of the residual stress state of a cold-rolled steel strip

The interplanar spacing D{hkl} vs. sin2ψ distributions were measured up to sin2ψ = 1 for the {110}, {200}, {211} and {222} reflections on a cold-rolled steel strip by means of neutron diffraction. Most measurements were carried out with narrow slits in the incident and outgoing beam, restricting the internal probe region to the interior of the 1 mm strip. For the {211} reflection the internal probe region was shifted from surface to surface. Additional measurements were performed with larger slits, giving averages for the whole cross-section. All D vs. sin2ψ curves were found to be non-linear. Plastic anisotropy was found to be the major reason for the non-linearities. From knowledge of the texture and the shape of the curves, it was possible to determine both the residual macrostresses and the residual stress state of particular grain fractions as a function of their crystallographic orientation.
