Description
Partitioning and transmutation (P and T) is a strategy to reduce the long-term radiotoxicity of waste generated in nuclear power facilities. Hereby Plutonium and the minor actinides (MA = Np, Am, and Cm) are separated from the nuclear waste (partitioning) and converted into shorter-lived or stable elements using neutron fission (transmutation). It is shown that the long-term toxicity of nuclear waste and the residual toxicity of nuclear waste is reduced by removing Plutonium and the MA from nuclear waste. (orig.)
