The influence of irradiation into the wear behaviour of polyethylene

Description
Irradiated specimens of UHMW-PE have been tested by a 'Pion-on-disc'-method against a metal pin. Increasing irradiation doses are leading to obviously increasing wear-rates. Irradiation in presence of nitrogen gives no advantage in comparison to normal air as an crosslinking agent, concerning tribological properties. (orig.)

Bestrahlte Pruefkoerper aus ultrahochmolekularem Niederdruckpolyaethylen wurden 'Pin-on-disc'-Verschleisstests mit dem Gleitpartner Metall unterzogen. Mit zunehmender Bestrahlungsdosis ergab sich eine deutliche Verschleisszunahme. Die Bestrahlung in Stickstoffatmosphaere bietet gegenueber Bestrahlung in Luft keine Vorteile im tribologischen Verhalten. (orig.)Additional details
