Description
222Rn is an immediate decay product of 226Ra, a daughter product of the 238U decay series. The inhalation of significant amounts of radon and its short-lived progeny has long been considered to be related to elevated incidences of lung diseases in uranium industry workers (1). To assess and minimize the radiation dose to the miners and to understand the adequacy of ventilation at different workings in the underground uranium mine, regular monitoring of 222Rn concentration at different working areas was adopted as an integrated part of the mining operation. Accurate 222Rn measurement in the mine workings plays a major role in the true dose assessment to the radiation workers. In this investigation, an inter-comparison study for 222Rn concentration was carried out using the Lucas Scintilation Cell, Alpha Guard and Low-Level Radon Detection System (LLRDS) techniques in the Turamdih underground U mine. The main objective of this study is to ensure the validation of these instruments and establish a correlation between them for the measured 222Rn concentration in order to ensure the quality control and quality assurance of the generated data
