Some results on the properties investigations of Zirconium alloys for VVER-1000 fuel cladding

Description

As fuel rod cladding material E110 alloy based on both powder and sponge fully meets design parameters of VVER-1000 reactors under operation presently. E110 alloy has sufficient endurance regarding uniform corrosion resistance and hydrogenation. After 6 years of operation in VVER- 1000 to the burnup of 73 MWt·d/kgU the thickness of oxide film on E110 cladding is no more than 10-15 μm and hydrogenation of the alloy is low - no more than 100-120 ppm H2. Advance materials for fuel rod claddings have been created basing on zirconium sponge - E110M, E125 (opt) and E635M alloys, ensuring improved characteristics of forming resistance compared to regular VVER cladding material from E110 alloy. Cladding tubes for pilot fuel rods for operation in 3 fuel assemblies of VVER-1000 reactor have been fabricated from advance materials. They were intended for operation starting in 2011 during three 1.5 year fuel campaigns to see the behavior of the above alloys under conditions of commercial operation of the fuel
