Longitudinal current distribution in the polar cusp region as a function of the interplanetary magnetic field orientation (a model)

  • 1. Leningradskij Gosudarstvennyj Univ. (USSR). Nauchno-Issledovatel'skij Fizicheskij Inst.

Description

The configuration of magnetic field lines in the vicinity of polar cusps is calculated when using a plane magnetopause model and assigning the DCF-current perturbation simulating the conditions in the interchanging area. Along the magnetic field lines calculated in such a way the equipotential lines of the electrostatic potential and longitutinal currents are projected into the ionosphere. On the basis of the calculations a model of spatial distribution of longitudinal currents in the cusp area at different orientations of the interplanetary magnetic field is proposed
