Fabrication technology for the future fuel : utilization and improvement of an established technology
Description
R and D on mixed oxide fuel has been developed since 1950s, but due to delay of commercialization of FBR and increased accumulation of surplus plutonium from recycled nuclear fuel resources, application of mixed oxide fuel in light water reactor has been continuously studied since 1970s. Currently in Europe mixed oxide fuel technology is being applied for commercial use and keeping on improvement of it. The major effort of improvement is focused on making its reactor performance same as the normal light water reactor fuel does and making it go higher burn-up. In this report background of MOX fuel technology and status is described shortly and then current activities in several countries are introduced in regards to fuel fabrication technology as well as future perspectives.
