Reactions K+d → K+0π-0pp/sub s/ at 5.5 GeV/c

Description

The results presented were obtained from a bubble chamber analysis of K+d interactions at an incident K+ momentum of 5.5 GeV/c. The cross section for the reaction K+n → K+π-p is presented and this cross section is compared with values at neighboring momenta. The K*0(890) is produced copiously in this reaction and production and decay parameters of the K*0(890) are presented. The K*0(890) is produced peripherally, and the usual asymmetry in the polar decay angular distribution in the Gottfried-Jackson frame is observed. The characteristics of the K*0(890) from the data presented and those of the anti K*0(890) produced in the line reversed reaction K-p → K-π+n at the same beam momentum are compared using several models. As predicted by strong cut Reggeized absorption models, line reversal breaking between these reactions was observed. The predictions of a model based on vector dominance and SU(3) gave good agreement with photoproduction data only in the forward direction. An analysis of K*0(890) production in terms of t-channel exchange amplitudes indicated the dominance of pion exchange in the forward direction. K*(1420) production is also observed in this reaction and the production and decay of the K*(1420) is discussed and compared with similar data at other momenta. A simple double Regge pole exchange model is applied to the nonresonant high mass Kπ portions of the data in this reaction and found to give good agreement. The cross section for the reaction K+n → K0π0p is also presented and compared with similar data at neighboring momenta. The production and decay parameters of the K*0(890) presented and isospin predictions are found to be satisfied
