A Study on the North Korea Nuclear Facility and Inventory Estimation of 5WMe GCR for North Korea's Denuclearization

In planning and developing a strategy to dismantle North Korea's nuclear facilities in preparation for the North's declaration of denuclearization, it was necessary to look at the current state of North Korea's nuclear facilities, including its nuclear development program, nuclear power plants and fuel fabrication facilities. Accordingly, we analyzed the characteristics and specialties of the North Korean nuclear facilities based on technical factors, including the evaluation and dismantling of the nuclear facilities in terms of decommissioning nuclear power plants, and administrative factors in terms of political and diplomatic aspects surrounding the North. In addition, for the 5 MWe GCR, which is classified as a key facility among North Korean nuclear facilities, neutrons and energy spectrum were calculated in Reactor Core, Reactor Vessel, Thermal Shield, and Bio concrete through MCNP code. In addition, the radioactive level and quantity of waste were calculated using the FISPACT Code to evaluate the amount of radioactive materials in the North Korean nuclear facilities. Through this, we presented basic data on the assessment of radioactive inventory of the North Korean nuclear facilities, which can be used as radiological characteristics and technical data when establishing strategies for decommissioning the North Korean nuclear facilities in the future, and such research should be carried out steadily in preparation for the North's denuclearization
