A study of the temperature dependence of the neutron transmission of uranium dioxide

Description
Measurements of the neutron transmission of uranium dioxide have been made for samples of thickness 10 mm-60 mm at temperatures of 293 K, 1100 K and 1800 K in the energy range 10eV-200 keV. Shape fitting has been carried out on selected low energy resolved resonances using a multilevel R matrix program to determine the effective temperatures of the hot samples. The ratios of the average transmission at different temperature measured in the unresolved region are compared with theoretical calculations in the range 1 keV-20 keV, which predict the main features of the results. A correlation is observed between the transmission ratios and previous measurements of the s wave strength function in different energy regions. (author)
