Observation of rotational states before fission barrier for the 232Th(n,f) reaction

  • 1. CEA Centre d'Etudes Nucleaires de Saclay, 91 - Gif-sur-Yvette (France). Dept. de Physique Nucleaire

Description

The 232Th fission cross section has been measured relative to that of 235U up to 5 MeV, with a neutron energy resolution of 3 keV at 1.6 MeV. The angular anisotropy of fission fragments has also been measured in the same energy range with an energy resolution of 6 keV at 1.6 MeV. The broad vibrational levels located above 1 MeV are resolved into sharp structures which are interpreted as rotational states. The rotational constants h2/2J of highly deformed 233Th are found to be 2.45 and 2.65 keV at 1.5 and 1.6 MeV respectively. Our results are interpreted by the possibility of a third minimum in the fission barrier
