High-resolution spectroscopy of the hydrogen Balmer-alpha line
Description
The wavelength of the hydrogen 2S/sub 1/2/ - 3P/sub 1/2/ transition, observed by using polarization spectroscopy to probe metastable hydrogen atoms produced in a dc discharge, was measured relative to a nearby molecular iodine transition. A measurement of the wavelength of the iodine transition then yielded the value R/sub infinity/ = 109737.31476(32) cm-1 for the Rydberg constant, with a precision more than three times greater than obtained previously. An improved measurement of the iodine wavelength could immediately yield an additional nearly three-fold improvement in the Ryberg constant, without requiring any further study of hydrogen transitions
