Equipment for detecting, fire fighting and removing consequences of sodium fire in steam generator case

Description

The patented equipment consists of the bottom of the steam generator case dropping into the opening connected with a short pipe to the tank filled with inert gas. The bottom is lined with an aluminium foil and on it is placed a conductor insulated from the bottom with e.g., asbestos, which may be disturbed by liquid sodium. In the pipe there is a partition of easily fusible alloy. In case of leakage the sodium drops to the bottom, penetrates the insulation and the connected alarm circuit signals sodium leakage. The sodium will break through the partition in the pipe and flows into the tank filled with inert gas which will extinguish the burning sodium. After the shutdown of the affected unit and cooling the remnants of the burnt and not burnt sodium may easily be removed from the bottom of the case by removing the aluminium foil. (Ha)
