Laue-Langevin Institute - neutron beams made available for experimentation
Description
The high flux reactor (RHF) at the Laue Langevin Institute (ILL) has a thermal power output of 58.3 MW, it entered into service in 1970 and since then has undergone several technical upgrades in order to remain a major neutron source. RHF is equipped with 20 experimental channels that feed about 40 experimental stations. The ILL in particular receives some 1500 to 2000 visits every year by scientists from all over the world, often for a stay of only a few days. It is important to facilitate researcher's access to the experimental areas and more important to ensure their safety and minimize radiological risks. The radiological protection of staff and researchers is ensured through training, safety awareness, efficient visual signalling of radiological zoning, safety engineered systems (for instance the opening of the neutron beam triggers the locking of the experimental station, so nobody can enter) and the classification of the experiments according to their hazards level
