Thyroid cancer after exposure to radioiodine
Description
It seems that a sizeable portion of the malignant thyroid tumors diagnosed after previous irradiation to a certain extent reflect the prevalence of nonchirical thyroid cancer in the general population. Thyroid carzinogenesis has been extensively studied in animals. Major experience with radiation-induced thyroid cancer stems mainly from the population of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To date three different population have been studied after exposure to J-131 from fallout (low-level-radiation). (DG)
Abstract (German)
Ein betraechtlicher Teil der boesartigen Schilddruesentumoren, die nach einer vorhergehenden Bestrahlung diagnostiziert wurden, scheint die Haeufigkeit nichtklinischen Schilddruesenkrebses in der Allgemeinbevoelkerung in einem gewissen Masse widerzuspiegeln. In Tierexperimenten ist die Entstehung von Schilddruesenkrebs extensiv untersucht worden. Umfangreiche Erfahrungen mit strahlungsinduziertem Schilddruesenkrebs wurden hauptsaechlich an der Bevoelkerung von Hiroschima und Nagasaki gewonnen. Bisher sind 3 verschiedene Bevoelkerungsgruppen nach der J-131-Exposition aus dem Fallout (Niedrig-Strahlung) untersucht worden. (DG)Additional details
