Optical studies of radiofrequency plasmas
Description
Highly time-resolved photographic and spectroscopic diagnostic techniques were developed to investigate the development of radio frequency discharges in air and nitrogen at frequencies in the h.f. band. These observations, when coupled with oscillographic records of discharge current and voltage, enable different phases of discharge development to be identified. The characteristics of these discharge phases are described, and the similarities and differences between high frequency and direct current breakdown are discussed. (author)
