Description
Any lattice gauge theory with scalar matter can be written in terms of gauge invariant fields with constraints on plaquettes and cubes of the lattice. We develop a mean field approximation in the new variables. The method is applied to the Z(2) and Z(4) Higgs models in four dimensions with encouraging results. (orig.)
