Description

Strong magnetic fields have become extremely important in many areas of physics research. The need for superconductor magnets generating strong magnetic fields over large volumes is especially pronounced in particle physics and thermonuclear fusion. This article discusses constraints on the design of superconductors for large magnets. By way of example we outline the magnets designed for forthcoming CMS and ATLAS experiments in particle physics at CERN (European Nuclear Research Centre) and the ITER-FEAT (Fusion Energy Advanced Tokamak) demonstration machine.
