Effects of fertilisation with sewage sludge on organic pollutant concentrations in soils

Sewage sludge, as well as three soils fetilized regularly with this sewage sludge for a longer period of time, and an untreated soil, were examined for PCDD/F and other chlorinated compounds. An accumulation of PCDD/F, partially beyond the BGA standard value for unrestricted agricultural utilization, was recognized in the investigated soils. In the soil which had been fertilized for 10 years, no accumulation of PCB or of other examined chlorinated compounds was found. A comparison of the patterns in the soils and in the sewage sludge indicates that the PCDD/F had been subject to a depletion in the soils, i.e. Cl4- and Cl5-DD/F through volatilisation and Cl7- and Cl8-DD/F through degradation. Abstract (German)
Klaerschlamm, sowie drei Boeden, die ueber lange Zeit regelmaessig mit diesem Klaerschlamm behandelt worden waren, und ein unbehandelter Boden, wurden auf PCDD/F und andere Chlorverbindungen untersucht. Eine Anreicherung von PCDD/F, zum Teil bis ueber den BGA Richtwert fuer uneingeschraenkte landwirtschaftliche Nutzung, wurde in den behandelten Boeden nachgewiesen. In dem Boden, der seit 10 Jahren geduengt worden war, war keine Akkumulation von PCBs oder von anderen untersuchten Chlorverbindungen festzustellen. Ein Vergleich der Muster in den Boeden und im Klaerschlamm laesst vermuten, dass die PCDD/F in den Boeden eine Abreicherung erfahren hatten: Cl4- und Cl5-DD/F durch Verfluechtigung und Cl7- und Cl8-DD/F durch Abbau.
