Analysis of uniformity of 13C incorporation in compounds of biological interest

Description

One problem encountered in biochemical and clinical applications of stable isotopes is the determination of the uniformity of 13C incorporation in compounds produced by in vivo photosynthesis using 13CO2. Such compounds were analyzed for uniformity of label, percent unlabeled material and percent enrichment by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry using a Finnigan Model 3300F GC-MS with a 6100 Data System. Both electron impact and chemical ionization modes were used to obtain total enrichment and to evaluate the distribution of the 13C. The results show that the method described is suitable for the detailed analysis of the 13C incorporation into glucose
