An experimental investigation of the secondary instability

  • 1. Osaka Prefectural Univ., Sakai (Japan). Coll. of Engineering

Description

To obtain a better understanding of the breakdown leading to turbulence, the structure and behaviour of a high-frequency disturbance superposed on the spatially growing primary wave are investigated experimentally in plane Poiseuille flow. A simple instability calculation is also made on the instantaneous inflexional velocity distribution appearing prior to the breakdown. These results have conclusively verified the validity of the concept of secondary instability. (orig.)
