Neutronic analysis of Gd2O3 as burnable poison
Description
For the reactors core design, the use of burnable poisons is one of the options for the control of in excess reactivity and the power form factor. As alternative procedures, the absorbing material may be included in pellets of an inert material or in fuel pellets. Besides, a cladding material and the locations of the fuel elements must be chosen for the first case. The CAREM reactor core design foresees the use of gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) as burnable poison. In this work, a comparative study was made, from the neutronic point of view, among the following alternatives for the poisons location: a) Gd2O3 bars supports in alumina (Al2O3), sheathed in steel; b) Gd2O3 bars supports in alumina sheathed in Zry-4; c) Gd2O3 in uranium dioxide (UO2) fuel pellets. En el diseno de nucleo de reactores, la utilizacion de venenos quemables es una de las opciones en el control de la reactividad en exceso y del factor de forma de la potencia. Como formas alternativas, el material absorbente puede ser incluido en pastillas de un material inerte o en las pastillas combustibles. En el primer caso debe, ademas, elegirse un material de vaina y las posiciones donde se ubicaran dentro del elemento combustible. En el diseno del nucleo del reactor CAREM se prevee la utilizacion de oxido de gadolinio (Gd2O3) como veneno quemable. En este trabajo se realizo un estudio comparativo, desde el punto de vista neutronico, entre las siguientes alternativas para la ubicacion de los venenos: a) Tenedores de barras de Gd2O3 en alumina (Al2O3), envainadas en acero; b) Tenedores de barras de Gd2O3 en alumina envainadas en Zry-4; c) Gd2O3 en las pastillas combustibles de dioxido de uranio (UO2).
